Corpus Christi — procession through the historic centre
📅 4 June
📍 Málaga historic centre
Corpus Christi is one of Málaga’s most solemn religious celebrations. The procession winds through the streets of the old town, with balconies adorned with shawls and flowers. The route passes through the Cathedral area, Calle Larios and Plaza de la Constitución.
It is a good opportunity to see the historic quarter in a very different atmosphere, particularly in the early morning before the procession begins.
Start of beach season
📅 All month
📍 Playa de la Malagueta and the Málaga coast
In June the lifeguard posts, sun loungers and chiringuitos are set up along the entire coastal strip. Water temperatures reach 20–22 °C and the beaches are not yet as crowded as in July and August — the ideal time to enjoy La Malagueta, Pedregalejo or El Palo in comfort.
Check the flag status and daily water temperature at playas.malaga.eu.
Noche de San Juan — bonfires on the beach
📅 23 June (night)
📍 Playa de la Malagueta and beaches along the coast
Noche de San Juan (Midsummer Night) is the most popular beach party of the year in Málaga. On the night of 23 June, thousands of people gather on La Malagueta and other city beaches to light bonfires, jump the waves, write wishes on paper and burn them in the flames. The beach fills up from around 22:00 and the atmosphere lasts until dawn.
San Juan traditions in Málaga:
- Jump over seven waves while making a wish
- Burn a piece of paper with your “bad things” written on it
- Eat 12 grapes at midnight
- Take a midnight dip for good luck
It is a unique experience blending tradition, music and beach life. Arrive early to find a good spot, and if you are arriving that day consider storing your luggage at the city-centre lockers first.
